When in Rome

Fellow bloggers, I'd like to ask you how far is too far when the practice of religion is concerned? Britain is an individualist country which allows people to have freedom of religion, this means that individuals are able to practice, teach, worship, change religion or not follow any religion freely.
It has been an ongoing political debate in parliament whether the burka, which is a full body cloak worn by some Muslim women, should be banned because of the fact it covers the woman’s whole face except the eyes.
Conservative MP Philip Hollobone proposes a bill that states “a person wearing a garment or other object intended by the wearer as its primary purpose to obscure the face in a public place shall be guilty of an offence". It adds that "a person providing a public service in person to a member of the public or receiving a public service in person from a public official shall remove any garment or other object intended by the wearer as its primary purpose to obscure the face unless such garment or other object is reasonably required for reasons of health or safety". It allows for exceptions on the basis of health and safety or "for the purposes of art, leisure or entertainment".
Although this may seem like a valid request some people argue that British citizens should be allowed to wear what they want as long as they are not harming anyone else. MP Vince Cable argues "People must have the right to choose how they want to dress and express their religion," Nick Clegg agrees commenting: "I think it is very un-British to start telling people what pieces of clothing they should wear."
Are these MPs fighting for human rights or is it just fear of being perceived as culturally insensitive? People who are in support for the burka being banned are often labelled as racist towards ethnic minorities such as Muslims, however, when it is reserved and Muslims are attacking British culture they are not regarded as racists. Is it fair that in a British society we are not entitled to our own opinion towards other cultures without being labelled as racist?
This clip shows an example of extremist Muslim protesters opinion of British citizens. This does not represent all Muslims but is an example of racism towards British women.

It is argued that the burka can make people feel uncomfortable as it is part of human understanding to read people from their facial expressions. When working with the public it is out of courtesy to show your face; having a hidden face, like Muslims, is another way that makes people feel uneasy towards the religion.

It has been recently reported that Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed, a terror suspect who was facing 20 different terrorism prevention orders, escaped surveillance by dressing in disguise in a burka while removing his electronic tag to free him-self from criminal convictions. Actions like this can make people un-safe as you can never be sure who is underneath the burka. If individuals began wearing other forms of facial clothing, for example balaclavas which also cover the face the government would restrict this. So this leaves me to ask you, do you think the burka should be banned in the UK? Please vote.

  1. I today come across your blog about ladies and them wearing burka's. I think that when they are living in our country they should play by our rules. Fair enough if it is their religion then that's fine for them to wear but if they are asked to remove so that officials can see their face then they should do so I.e going through customs at the airport, or if they ever have to appear in court. They think it is their human right not to have to reveal their burka when asked but if it is for the safety of the BRitish public then they should be made to remove itt, but as usual this stupid system that we have in this country always seems to let them get away with it. They are quite intimidating when worn as all you can see are their eyes. Also before Xmas a terrorist managed to dress as a woman wearing a burka and managed to escape from the police as they thought he was a lady!! Underneath their burka's they wear fashionable clothes, I have seen whilst on holidays ladies going into the sea wearing them, I thought this was quite dangerous as when clothing becomes wet I would think its very heavy. I hope my comments are useful to you.

  2. Hi Mandy,
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. I agree with you in that they should not come into our country and try and change the law or break the rules just the same as if we were to go to another country for example, Dubai we would respect the fact they have laws that state women should be covered up so we would not walk around half naked in respect for their country. It seems to me that the government has left this country open to anyone which has caused people to have no respect for the laws of the country or even the British people themselves.
Yes I can imagine it being very uncomfortable as well as dangerous going into the sea in a burka. In some cases Muslims are forced by their families to follow the very strict laws they have. This can be very challenging for some Muslims, particularly when they are mixing with British people they can feel left out so removing a barrier like the burka may help some Muslims feel more included in British culture.

    Thank you

  3. In this day and age I believe its difficult to speak out about beliefs of what is right and wrong regarding the wearing of the burka without causing tension among some people. We have to remember that a burka can easily be used by criminals and terrorists to act out unlawful behaviour with disastrous consequences and any
Cctv would be futile . How would the authorities identify anyone if they cannot see them. mi5/mi6
Go to great lengths to try and keep our citizens feel safe on the streets and in the air . I believe a burka should
Be banned purely based on this and we should not give out the message that its ok to wear one . We already
Know that men are using this method to disguise themselves . The uk is a us ally and as such we are a very real
Target for terrorism and must not become complacent . Its a shame for all the genuine women who wish dress
According to their belief , but we live in the real world . Keep us safe

  4. Hello Sam,
Thank you for taking the time to comment and read on my blog. I agree, it is a very difficult subject to discuss as it is regarding religion which people take very seriously and can be very sensitive about.
Yes exactly, it is a major risk to society and now that one person has been reported to escape conviction using the burka more people may follow and try to do the same. Not only that people can use the burka as a disguise to steal things and other criminal activities.
Being a liberal country that welcomes all religions and nationalities it is not something against Muslim's themselves as everyone has the right to practice religion freely and without restraint but when it comes to the safety of people, like you said.
    Thank you
